Did you know?

Back in 1703, an unruly young sailor known as Alexander Selkirk from nearby Lower Largo, set sail and joined buccaneering expeditions to the South Sea. A year later, Selkirk was marooned on an uninhabited island in the South Pacific Ocean, 420 miles off the Chilean coast.

Selkirk survived on what is now known as Robinson Crusoe Island, the largest of three islands within the Juan Fernandez archipelago, for over four years.

Every day, Selkirk would venture to a rocky viewpoint, or ‘mirador’, high above San Juan Bautista, where he would scan the horizon on both sides of the island to look for ships.

It was these castaway experiences that provided the inspiration for Daniel Defoe’s famous book, Robinson Crusoe. Mirador de Selkirk is approximately 7,693 miles from Elie Holiday Park, Shell Bay!
