Abbeyford Leisure keep St Andrews beaches barefoot friendly with Ben Fogle
Management from Abbeyford Leisure joined Ben Fogle, Barefoot Wines, environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), and a team of volunteers today in a bid to help keep St Andrews West Sands Beach barefoot friendly.
The national Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project, now in its sixth year, kicked off in May and continued throughout spring and summer with environmentalist and adventurer Ben Fogle as ambassador. And today, Abbeyford Leisure's Peter Davies and Kevan Lodge (pictured below), rolled-up their sleeves on what was a very warm and blustery Monday morning to help out. 58kg of rubbish was collected during the session including a prize-winning leopard-print glove!
The St Andrews event marked the last this year in a series of beach cleans and the West Sands was reported to have been one of the cleanest stretches of coast undertaken.
The event concluded with an official rubbish weigh-in and as volunteers relaxed in the warm September sunshine with a well-earned glass of Barefoot Wine, Ben Fogle congratulated the team by saying: "We end the Barefoot beach rescue season with 1106 volunteers removing 1760kg of rubbish from 14 beaches."
